Creating Virtual Cards
Last updated April 9, 2026
Overview
Slash virtual cards are digital charge cards you can use in mobile wallets, online payment gateways, subscription payments, and more. They work anywhere Visa is accepted, can be created instantly, and earn cashback for your business. They’re especially useful for managing subscriptions, recurring vendor payments, employee expenses, or separating spend by project or department.
In this article, we’ll walk through how to create and use virtual cards in Slash.
How to Create a Virtual Card
Step 1: Navigate to Cards
From your Slash dashboard, select the 'Cards' menu in the left sidebar.

Step 2: Initiate New Card Creation
Click 'Add' in the top right corner, then select 'New Virtual Card' from the dropdown menu.

Step 3: Configure Card Details
Once you select 'New Virtual Card,' the card creation window will appear. You'll need to in the following information:
- Card name: A descriptive name to help you identify this card (e.g., "Marketing Subscriptions" or "AWS Payments").
- Number of cards: Toggles how many cards you're creating. There's no limit to how many virtual cards you can create. Note: The configurations you apply will apply to every card you create during this workflow; you can always go back and adjust rules and limits individually later on.
- Virtual account: Select which subaccount the card should draw funds from.
- Card group (optional): Assigns your virtual card to a preset configuration of rules, limits, and other restrictions that you've previously created.
- Cardholder (optional): Assign the card to yourself or a team member, or don't. Virtual cards still work just fine without a cardholder name. The card will be assigned a default name that corresponds to your business entity; you can always assign a cardholder name to previously created cards later.

Step 4: Set Spending Controls (Optional)
After filling out the basic details for the card, you can configure limits and restrictions to control how the card is used by navigating to the 'Limits' panel:
- Transaction size limit: Set minimum or maximum amounts per transaction
- Utilization limit: Set daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, or total (one-time) limits
- Merchant categories: Allow or block specific merchant types (e.g., Travel, Dining)
- MCCs: A four-digit code assigned by card networks (in this case, Visa) that classifies a business by the type of products it sells.
- Allowed countries: Restrict where the card can be used geographically

Step 5: Review and Create
Review your card details, settings, and the number of cards you're creating. Once you're all set, click Create Card. Your virtual card will be available immediately in your dashboard; you can click 'View Card' to see its details in your list of cards.

Additional Information
- Single-use cards: For one-time purchases, you can create a single-use virtual card that automatically closes after the first transaction. To do this, select 'Total' from the utilization limit dropdown (refer to step 4).
- Card groups: You can preset spending rules that correspond to different teams, departments, or company locations to easily apply the same spending rules to multiple cards at once. To learn more about setting up card groups, read our article 'Configuring Card Groups.'
- Pause and resume: You can temporarily disable a card without deleting it by clicking the 'Pause' button on the card's side-view panel. When you want to start using the card again, find it in your card list and press 'Resume.'
